Beneath the lights, a longing for the Light.
Reach one of the largest unreached peoples in one of the world’s largest cities.
ABOUT THIS JOURNEYJapan is one of the world’s most influential nations—and one of its least reached by the gospel. Tokyo offers a unique opportunity to experience mission work in a vast global city where spiritual need often exists beneath the surface of prosperity, order, and modern life.
As an international center for education, business, tourism, and migration, Tokyo is also home to people from across Asia and around the world. Ministry here provides opportunities to engage both Japanese communities and diaspora populations through relationships, hospitality, conversational English, creative outreach, prayer, evangelism, and partnership with local churches and missionaries.
Come to Tokyo and step into God’s heart for the nations
What participants will experience:
Experience ministry in a highly urban, post-Christian context.
Learn how culture shapes spiritual beliefs and gospel conversations.
Engage Japanese people and international residents relationally.
Serve alongside long-term missionaries and local ministry partners.
Explore how diaspora ministry connects local outreach with global mission.
Discern how God may be calling them to participate in reaching the nations.
Engage Japan’s biggest city
Participants will serve alongside local ministry teams and partners in Tokyo and Kobe, bringing the hope of Christ to communities with limited gospel access. Ministry opportunities may include conversational English programs, art and gaming outreach, homeless engagement, cultural discussions, evangelism, prayer walking, tract distribution, and Bible studies. Before the trip, local leaders will help prepare the team for ministry in Japan. While there, participants can expect one or two scheduled ministry activities each day, along with a Sabbath day for rest. Because this is both cross-cultural ministry and spiritual work, team members should arrive spiritually prepared and commit to daily prayer and personal devotions. Local leaders will provide transportation guidance, encourage growing independence within the cities, and conclude the trip with a time of reflection and debriefing.
Why Japan?
Japan is one of the least-reached nations in the world: roughly 1% of its 120+ million people identify as Christian, and the evangelical share is smaller still.
It also has full religious freedom, a safe environment, and real openness to relationships with outsiders, so students and volunteers can serve there freely through English outreach, community events, and friendship.
Few places offer this combination of deep spiritual need and wide-open doors, which is why we believe Japan is a strategic place to send our teams.
